Alongside these rivers human relics such as footsteps and vehicle tracks weave in and out of the frame\, giving viewers a sense of scale. Photographed from a helicopter\, my work reveals the painterly interfolds of fluid texture and vibrant sediment that create graphic compositions only visible from the sky. In this sublime yet forbidding landscape\, we discover that the forces of nature are profound.” \n– Brooke Holm \nPresented by Brookfield Properties Arts & Culture and Photoville for their annual city-wide festival. \nABOUT BROOKE HOLM \nBrooke Holm is an Australian-American photographer and explorer based in Brooklyn\, NY. In her work\, Holm studies the elemental features of the Earth through detailed environmental portraits. She focuses on the physical body of the Earth\, often treated by humankind as we treat any body\, with opposing practices of reverence and exploitation. \nHolm often works from small aircraft\, photographing the veins and arteries of the planet and revealing the organic and inorganic pockmarks of time on the surface. She is interested in the relationship between this terrestrial life form and our own lives\, which further extends into the relationship between this world and other worlds. \nBy disrupting the scale and perspective at which we have become accustomed to consuming our planet\, Holm examines the false dichotomy between humans and nature and seeks a more accurate representation of co-existence. When altering our conventional viewpoint\, the greater picture is a network of interconnected bodies. Our bodies are merely extensions of the body of the Earth.\n \nABOUT PHOTOVILLE \nPhotoville is a New York-based non-profit organization that works to promote a wider understanding and increased access to the art of photography for all. Founded in 2011 in Brooklyn\, NY\, Photoville was built on the principles of addressing cultural equity and inclusion\, which we are always striving for\, by ensuring that the artists we exhibit are diverse in gender\, class\, and race. \nIn pursuit of its mission\, Photoville produces an annual\, city-wide open air photography festival in New York City\, a wide range of free educational community initiatives\, and a nationwide program of public art exhibitions. \nBy activating public spaces\, amplifying visual storytellers\, and creating unique and highly innovative exhibition and programming environments\, we join the cause of nurturing a new lens of representation. \nThrough creative partnerships with festivals\, city agencies\, and other nonprofit organizations\, Photoville offers visual storytellers\, educators\, and students financial support\, mentorship\, and promotional & production resources\, on a range of exhibition opportunities.
